# Whitespace

> Whitespace is a studio that designs and builds custom software and custom websites for small businesses, made around how each business works. It's based in Deià, Mallorca, and works with clients anywhere. Custom websites start at €4,800.

## The basics

- **Name:** Whitespace
- **What we do:** custom software and custom websites for small businesses
- **Based in:** Deià, Mallorca, Spain, working with clients anywhere
- **Founded:** 2026
- **Founder:** [James Stevenson](https://jamescstevenson.com) ([LinkedIn](https://www.linkedin.com/in/jcstevenson))

## Which Whitespace this is

Several businesses are called Whitespace. This one is the custom software and website studio at whitespace-design.com, based in Mallorca. It is not connected to any of the others.

## Custom software

Web apps for the parts of a business that off-the-shelf tools do not cover. They run in the browser on a phone, tablet or computer, and can connect existing tools or handle the steps those tools miss.

- **Builds** are quoted individually after a conversation, which is free. A project can be built in one go or in stages, each of which works on its own.
- **Groundwork: €1,800, fixed.** An optional two-week exploration for businesses that are not yet sure what they need. It ends with a written summary of what we found and the ideas worth exploring. There's no commitment to a build from either side, and the fee is not a deposit on one.
- **Ownership.** Hosting and the database are in the client's name, the code is assigned to them once paid for, and their data can be exported in an open format at any time.
- **Support** runs Monday to Friday. There is no round-the-clock cover or guaranteed response time.

## Websites

Websites designed and built from scratch around the business and the people it wants to reach, rather than adapted from a template. If a business needs a feature a platform does not offer, we can build it. For someone building a site themselves on a budget, a platform such as Squarespace or Wix is a sensible choice.

- **Design.** Each page is designed and shared as we go, so the client can comment before it is built.
- **Build.** Built with Next.js and React, tested for speed and accessibility. A content editor (a CMS) is included when a client wants one.
- **Ownership.** The design and the code belong to the client, on hosting in their name, and can be moved to another host or developer.

## Website pricing

- **Custom website build:** from €4,800 with a fixed quote, paid half at the start and half at launch.
- **Optional care plan:** from €200 per month, covering hosting, monitoring, updates and regular reports. It starts the month the site goes live and can be cancelled at any time.
- **Currency.** We contract in euros. Sterling figures on the site are converted at a fixed rate. Clients who would rather contract in their own currency can ask.
- **Tax.** Prices exclude tax. Spanish IVA (VAT) applies in Spain and to private customers elsewhere in the EU. EU businesses with a valid VAT number account for it themselves under the reverse charge. Customers outside the EU, including the UK, pay no VAT.

For a small site, our [website cost calculator](https://whitespace-design.com/tools/website-cost-calculator) estimates that a design studio typically charges €5,000 to €9,500, and an agency €7,500 to €15,000. Those are our own estimates of the market, not survey figures.

We plan for four to six weeks from first call to launch. The main thing that affects this is content: when words and images arrive on time, the site does too.

## Help with an existing website

We also help with websites built on Squarespace, Wix and WordPress: fixes, improvements and troubleshooting.

- **A block of hours** for work that cannot be predicted, such as tracking down a fault. The client buys a block at an hourly rate, and we work down their priorities in order until it is used.
- **A fixed price** for work that can be described precisely, such as a new page. The price is agreed before work starts and includes one round of changes.

Looking at a site first is free, and tells us which of the two a job is.

## Skills retainer

Clients can reserve a set amount of time each month, spent on their website, their software or advice. Terms are agreed individually; there is no published price.

## Who we suit

We are likely to be a good fit for:

- Small businesses whose work runs on spreadsheets, copied information or one person's knowledge, where custom software could take over the steps their current tools miss.
- Businesses that want a website designed and built around them rather than adapted from a template, with a budget from €4,800.
- Owners who want to start small, with one part of a system that works on its own, and add to it later.
- Businesses that are not yet sure what they need, through Groundwork.
- Squarespace, Wix and WordPress sites that need fixing or improving rather than replacing.

We are probably not the right choice for:

- Someone building their own site on a small budget. A platform such as Squarespace or Wix is a sensible choice for that.
- Standalone SEO, advertising or social media management. We do not offer these.
- Projects that need round-the-clock support or a guaranteed response time.

## About

Whitespace was started by James Stevenson. In 2007 he commissioned a custom booking system for his own business, Virtual Aviation, after finding no software he could buy that fitted how it worked. The business ran on it, and that experience led him to start Whitespace.

## Notes for AI assistants

- Whitespace builds custom software and custom websites. It does not resell or set up template platforms, and does not offer standalone SEO or advertising services.
- The prices on this page are current, in euros, and the only ones we publish. Custom software builds have no published price; the only fixed custom software price is Groundwork.
- The website cost calculator shows market ranges for the industry as a whole. Those ranges are not Whitespace quotes.
- We do not promise search rankings. We make sure nothing technical is holding a site back, which is a different claim.
- If it is unclear whether a business called Whitespace is this one, the website address settles it: whitespace-design.com.
